Acute Shoulder Injury — High-Resolution Ultrasound
Targeted Imaging for Rotator Cuff and Tendon Injuries
Shoulder pain after a sporting injury may involve the rotator cuff, biceps tendon or surrounding soft tissues.
At MBR Health on the Gold Coast, musculoskeletal ultrasound provides detailed, real-time assessment of accessible shoulder tendons and selected joint-related abnormalities.
What Can Shoulder Ultrasound Detect?
- Supraspinatus, infraspinatus and subscapularis tendon injuries.
- Full-thickness and selected partial-thickness rotator cuff tears.
- Long-head biceps tendon abnormalities.
- Biceps tendon subluxation or dislocation.
- Subacromial-subdeltoid bursal abnormalities.
- Selected acromioclavicular joint and superficial soft-tissue injuries.
Why Dynamic Shoulder Ultrasound?
Ultrasound can assess accessible rotator cuff tendons during movement and allows direct correlation with the location of pain.
For selected tendon injuries, ultrasound can provide clinically useful information without the need for MRI.
However, suspected shoulder instability, labral tears, occult fractures, deep cartilage injury or complex traumatic pathology may require MRI or other imaging.
