Acute Elbow Injury — Ultra-High-Resolution 3T MRI
A Painful Elbow May Involve More Than a Tendon.
Falls, throwing injuries, hyperextension and sporting impacts can damage ligaments, tendons, cartilage and bone.
The elbow is a complex joint involving three articulations, multiple stabilising ligaments and several important tendon attachments.
At MBR Health on the Gold Coast, our advanced Philips 3T MRI provides detailed assessment of elbow anatomy using dedicated high-resolution imaging protocols.
What Can Elbow MRI Detect?
- Ulnar collateral ligament injuries, including throwing-related injuries.
- Lateral collateral ligament complex injuries.
- Common extensor and flexor tendon tears.
- Distal biceps tendon injuries.
- Triceps tendon injuries.
- Osteochondral lesions and cartilage abnormalities.
- Occult fractures and bone marrow injuries.
- Joint effusion and associated soft-tissue abnormalities.
Why Advanced 3D MRI?
High-resolution three-dimensional imaging allows detailed assessment of small ligaments, tendon attachments and cartilage surfaces.
Selected sub-0.5 mm 3D acquisitions permit multiplanar reconstruction, which may assist the assessment of complex elbow injuries.
MRI also evaluates deeper joint structures and bone marrow that cannot be fully assessed with ultrasound.
MRI or Ultrasound?
Ultrasound may be particularly useful for selected superficial tendon injuries and dynamic assessment.
MRI offers more comprehensive evaluation when ligament disruption, occult fracture, osteochondral injury or multiple injured structures are suspected.
