Acute Ankle Injury — Ultra-High-Resolution 3T MRI
Rolled Your Ankle? Still Unable to Walk Normally?
Not every ankle injury is a simple sprain, and not every ankle injury is visible on X-ray.
A twisting injury, awkward landing or direct impact may damage ligaments, tendons, cartilage or bone. Significant injuries can sometimes be difficult to distinguish clinically.
At MBR Health on the Gold Coast, our advanced 3T MRI provides detailed assessment of ankle injuries, using dedicated high-resolution protocols designed for the anatomical region being examined.
What Can MRI Detect?
- Lateral ankle ligament injuries, including ATFL and CFL tears.
- Syndesmotic injuries, commonly called high ankle sprains.
- Deltoid ligament injuries.
- Peroneal, posterior tibial and other tendon injuries.
- Osteochondral injuries of the talus.
- Bone bruising, stress reactions and occult fractures.
- Midfoot ligament injuries, including suspected Lisfranc injuries.
- Why Advanced 3D MRI?
Selected sub-0.5 mm 3D acquisitions allow detailed multiplanar assessment of small structures, including ligaments, tendons and joint surfaces.
MRI also evaluates the underlying bone marrow, which can be particularly important when an injury is not apparent on initial X-ray.
Ankle?
The examination must be targeted to the injured region. A dedicated ankle MRI does not necessarily include the forefoot, and a dedicated foot MRI may not adequately assess the ankle ligaments. We will have you complete a pain chart prior to the exam to minimise the risk of injury falling outside the scanned region.
Our radiologist will review your symptoms and injury mechanism to confirm the appropriate examination - in some circumstances a foot and ankle MRI is required and this will incur additional cost.
