Acute Shoulder Injury — Ultra-High-Resolution 3T MRI

Injured Your Shoulder? Understand the Extent of the Damage.

Shoulder pain after a fall, dislocation, lifting injury or sporting collision may involve several structures.

The shoulder combines an exceptionally wide range of movement with a complex network of tendons, ligaments, cartilage and stabilising structures.

At MBR Health on the Gold Coast, our advanced Philips 3T MRI provides detailed assessment of the shoulder using specialised high-resolution imaging protocols.

What Can Shoulder MRI Detect?

  • Rotator cuff tears, including supraspinatus, infraspinatus and subscapularis injuries.
  • Biceps tendon abnormalities.
  • Labral injuries, including selected Bankart and SLAP lesions.
  • Injuries associated with shoulder dislocation or instability.
  • Joint capsule and ligament abnormalities.
  • Cartilage and osteochondral injuries.
  • Bone bruising and occult fractures.
  • Associated muscle and soft-tissue injuries.

The Advantage of Ultra-High-Resolution 3D MRI

Selected sub-0.5 mm 3D acquisitions allow detailed assessment of shoulder anatomy in multiple planes.

This can be particularly valuable when evaluating complex rotator cuff pathology or injury involving more than one structure.

Certain labral or instability-related conditions may require additional targeted imaging, including MR arthrography where clinically indicated. Standard MRI does not identify every labral abnormality.

MRI or Ultrasound?

Ultrasound can be excellent for assessing accessible rotator cuff tendons and selected dynamic abnormalities.

MRI provides a broader assessment of the shoulder joint, including the labrum, cartilage, deeper stabilising structures and bone marrow.
